Every wedding and birthday party these days has some form of a photo booth with photo props on a stick. The idea has become a classic and can be customized to match any theme of event or party. Plus, who doesn’t love pretending to have a mustache?
These cookie prop pops might not be ideal to be passed around for a photo booth but they would make a unique and functional party favor! Here’s how I made them!
One important thing before you even get baking is to make sure that you make your cookie dough slightly drier than normal and don’t use baking soda or baking powder in your recipe. This will help the cookies to keep their shape with sharper edges. When you roll your dough out, make sure it is thicker than your sticks. You can use something thinner like popsicle sticks, but I chose to use paper straws to add more whimsy.
If you don’t have cookie cutters in these shapes, you can find printable prop templates online and use those to trace and free hand cut the shapes you need. Here is a cute set with similar shapes plus a crown. After cutting the cookies out, gently slide the sticks into the bottom of the cookies and then press the cookie flat again wherever there are bulges. Then freeze for 5 minutes before baking. This also helps the cookies to keep their shape.
If your sticks or straws are showing through the cookie at all on the back side, seal them with some thick royal icing.
Next, I just iced the cookies with white royal icing. You can definitely do them with all different colors but trust me, that’s more work than necessary. Plus, painting is way more fun and it would make a really fun activity for kids to do at the party if you wanted to make the prop pop idea even more interactive.
After the icing is completely dry (use a fan for 4+ hours for a shiny, smooth surface), you’re ready to paint! Use liquid food color or dilute gel food color with a few drops of Everclear or vodka.
Now, it’s time to get goofy! These are still somewhat fragile because the cookies are heavy but I played for quite a while with them and none of them broke. Even if they had, that’s just an early dessert, and I don’t think anyone would complain about that!
