Aside from the sheer awe factor of anything space related, there was just something so whimsical and majestic about doing this technique. I’ve done a space background before for a previous Star Wars set but for that one, I just did black icing with white wet-on-wet stars and then airbrushed some pearl sheen over the top. For this set, though, I wanted something a bit more complex. The technique is so simple and almost impossible to mess up, but the result is almost mesmerizing.
Flood the cookies using any grey icing. This grey was honestly just the result of mixing all of my leftover icing colors from the week before but essentially no grey will show through anyways, so it doesn’t matter too much. Let the icing dry for a few hours.
Airbrush most of the cookie with black. Leave some varying “blank” spaces and try to make each cookie a little different. I don’t buy regular airbrush colors, only the pearl/sheen colors. Instead, I just use good old-fashioned liquid food coloring that you can buy at the grocery store. Everyone ends up with colored mouths after eating the cookies but honestly, that happens even with airbrush-specific colors too!
Airbrush the “blank spaces” with blue and purple sheen airbrush colors. I prefer AmeriMist colors but I added in a few drops of liquid food color to add a little more punch.
Be sure to tag me if you try out this for a set of cookies, although it would be stunning on cake as well! I would LOVE to see what you all come up with!
